Here comes the Garbage Barge

LO: We are learning to determine the author’s purpose.

Authors have many different reasons for writing. For example, an author might write to inform or explain something to the reader about a topic, to persuade someone to think about an idea or convince them to do something, or simply to tell an entertaining story. Sometimes it’s hard to identify the author’s purpose because there might be a little bit of everything in the story.

Authors don’t usually state a purpose, so you need to pay close attention to the details that
are given in the text in order to be able to determine the author’s purpose for writing.

THINK! What was the main reason this story was written? This will be the author’s purpose.

You need to find evidence in the story that would support the author’s purpose. List evidence under the appropriate purpose. Once you have completed this blog it with an explanation of what you have done and the story you have read!

Persuade/convince
Inform
Entertain
Did the author describe real or imaginary characters? Places? Events?
So the thing is this man
Was coming to take the garbage.
The garbage barge (what date)

List the real places
When they took it tey
Had a boat and they put it there.
Did the author try to make me laugh? (entertain)
The man rang to them that the rubbish is going
To take it the rubbish.
And then they had people taking the rubbish to put it in the boat.
Before they put it in the boat they put it in the fire to make it burn.
Did the author tell me a story? (entertain or explain)
The author told me a story from back then.

Did the author try to teach me something? (inform)
The author taught me to keep our world safe.

Did the author try to change my opinion about something? (persuade)
No the author didn't.

On Wednesday we walked to Te Oro with Mr Gaffney  and Mrs Middleton. Some mums and dads came with us. They were Viliami’s dad and mum, Taniela‘s mum, Maraia’s mum and the teachers.

When we arrived there we went inside then Kelly, one of the teachers told us to take our shoes off. We got into three groups, weaving, painting and drawing. I was in the weaving group.
